Namban Folding Screens Glass Candle Lampshade - Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

Adaptation
Polypropylene
Glass candle lampshade, inspired by a detail of a Namban folding screen (pair), attributed to Kanō Domi, dating from the late 16th century.
The arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in 1543 gave rise to commercial and cultural exchanges that were recorded in the two pairs of screens present in this museum: the curiosity and festive atmosphere aroused by the arrival of the black ship of the namban jin (the barbarians from the south, as the Portuguese were called) in the port of Nagasaki.
